Between website coding, album recording, cover gigs, PC repairs and after hours jobs from my Manager, I’m finding the only place where I can get a decent sleep at the moment is at work (kidding Dean!). I haven’t even really had time to update my blog of late, so here’s some of what I’m up to:
I’ve been songwriting like crazy this year, hoping to put a strong library of originals together for shows and demos. I’ve been deafening myself each night trying to produce my songs to the most pofessional sound I can pull from my dodgey computer set up, each night at home. My lack of the “proper” gear makes the task take longer than if I were in a pro studio. Plus there is the element of me being a perfectionist. I’ll be sending these tracks of to be professionally mastered so as long as I get them close enough, they should be ok.
Next, there is the massive “research” phase I am in. CD Duplication, Cover Printing, Dealing with A&R Reps, Venues for Gigs, CD Launches, Labels, Distributions … etc, etc. I learnt a lot from my experience at the PBS Song Festival Gig – but the main thing I learned is that I have a LOT to learn!
I have been getting heaps of cover work recently which has been awesome – I am getting better each show. I update my reptoire pretty regularly, trying to put in songs that are most requested (yes, I now know Khe San!). Most gigs I do are worth giving up a portion of my weekend for. I am now averaging 1 gig a week up until Christmas.
So it’s definately a case of me burning the candle at both ends. Oh well I’m off to fix one of the many busted printers here at work … and then maybe a nap
