Firefly – the Movie

After much anticipation (and bugging of the guys at work) I finally got to see the movie “Serenity”.

I really got hooked on the series Firefly and was watching the episodes back to back when the whole thing came to a halt at episode 14. I was saddened to find out that the series was cancelled at that point and the last 2 episodes I had watched weren’t even aired on TV. Joss Wheden has created a fantastic Sci Fi story with characters I can’t get enough of – the movie was no exception. I am, however, bias due to me being a big fan of all Joss Wheden’s work.

I don’t feel the movie will win any critical acclaim, but it was an entertaining ride none the less. I do recommend seeing the TV series first if you want to get the most out of it. Although, Mel didn’t watch much of the TV show and was still able to follow the complex storyline.

It’s a shame they had to cram so much good storyline into about 100 minutes. It would have been a lot better spread out over another 10 episodes in my opinion.

Giggles and Goals

I have lots going on at the moment but seem to come up with some kind of writers block when coming here to blog about it. Oh well I’ll do my best to catch everyone up.

*Inhale*

I am still gigging – or giggling (as Mel calls it). Last Friday I had one at the “Dorset Gardens Hotel” in Croydon. Usual type of pub crowd, but only small numbers due to the Grand Final being the next day. Marion came along and my early start/finish meant that we could have a beer and a chat. Marion is going overseas again on Wednesday week to China so we are trying to catch up a bit before she is out of the country for ages and we won’t have the opportunity. That reminds me – I must update my Gig Guide. I have heaps of work coming up in November, including a wedding, a 21st (if the date is changed from being the same date as the previously mentioned wedding) and about 5 pub gigs at my usual venues. So it will be a month of no sleep, but good money – not such a bad thing.

We went over to Mums for a visit on GF day. We watched the great game on their widescreen telly. I love it when they are a close match like that, both teams did really well. Later that night we had a nice dinner at the Tudor Inn. Sunday I switched back to Geek mode and continued improving my homes cabling. Andrew and Jaqui came over for a bit to do some Xbox “upgrading”. Andrew has found a great new auto-installer that has loads of features. Including an option that will load a different dashboard according to what button you use to turn the machine on – nice :-) . We spent a bit of time watching a slideshow of Jaqui’s recent trip overseas. We were able to connect Andrews laptop to my wireless network and have the xbox display each photo in order automatically across the network. Thats right! Sometimes the stuff in my house does work!!

Turn on

My house has been a technological nightmare over the past week. Our internet decided to play funny buggers and cut everyone off after about 10mins of use. After I upgraded my router’s firmware in an attempt to fix it, a couple of setting changes didn’t take – so I was required to do a hardware reset. This was the moment I discovered that the hardware reset on my router didn’t work. I now have to send it back to be fixed by D-Link (joy!).

I decided to use this as an excuse to change/upgrade our house setup so Mel and I wandered down to good ol’ Dick Smiths. Long story (small fortune) short, I have now changed my home network to this as a router and this for my wireless access point and printer server. I will sell my previous router and print server on eBay (when the router is returned from D-Link). This hopefully will make up some of the cost.

After a lot of crawling behind furniture and configuring of settings, I finally have everything operational. All my devices are working in harmony with one another again – especially now, since I can control it all brilliantly with my new universal remote.

Now I’m just waiting on my new (used) Laserjet to be delivered by Richard. Once that arrives, I probably won’t have any money left to power everything but hey – what a setup!

John Mayer TrioBeing a huge John Mayer Fan, I was delighted to see the news “New Single available on iTunes”. Most people know I’ve been yelling at my Car Stereo, my iPod and my TV whenever hes on: “Release a new album already!”. More on “iTunes” in a second.

The Grammy award winning artist John Mayer, has now formed the “John Mayer Trio” (duh!) and has changed his sound significantly. He is slowly steering away from pop and heading towards his blues roots. His playing has always been highly influenced by blues players such as Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix.

His new band has been gigging around the US over this past year. I’ve been lucky enough to obtain a few bootlegs of their performances. As a result, I have heard his new single “Who did you think I was” and the B-Side “Come When I Call” but wanted to do the right thing and download them off the Apple music store where they are now available. Being a newbie to the Mac world, I soon found out that we can’t get songs from the US store and the Australian one is STILL not available yet. Grr…. Score one more for the “naughty” downloading.

Oh well, I still want to buy his stuff but will now have to wait “1980’s style” for it to come into a record store. :-(

UPDATE:
The album will be called “Continuum

Catching up …

I’ve been slack on the blogging lately so I thought I’d take this opportunity to catch up.

September is turning out to be a very busy month for me. I am getting heaps of solo YoursTRULY work from my agents. Not that I mind – the money is coming in handy. I am loving playing guitar at the moment. Mel has a hard time getting my to stop playing with my “Willy” (I called my new Fender Strat “Willy”). I have been doing a few freebies of late too. One of which was a couple of gigs down in Dromana helping Dad out with their Primary School production. Dad writes the shows, including the music, every year and needs someone who can come in and sightread his chord charts.

I’m still slaving away at my “9 to 5″, fighing the never ending battle against HP inkjets that won’t print for one reason or another. I can’t wait until they go the way of the Floppy Disc. We are fast approaching Term 4 which is renowned for being the quietest month of the year.

But I am mostly looking forward to when Mel and I go to Qeensland in 19 days!!! In 3 weeks ill be tanning my fat pasty white skin under the sun (weather permitting) at the Gold Coast. I have never been before and look forward to all the theme parks.

So what have you been up to?

Family Reunion

Dave Annable

After watching the beginning of the new US TV series “Reunion“, I couldn’t help but notice the above name in the credits. I’m sure for all you Mr Smith’s and Mrs Jones’s out there, this is a regular occurance – but not for the Annable clan. There is very few of us in the phone book and 90% of them are our direct relatives.

Dave Annable plays a character called Aaron in Reunion, but I was aware of him before from an ego search in the IMDb

You never know, we could have had the same Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather!

Hooray for Hollywood!

Old TVToday is the dawn of the USA TV seasons. All of my favourite series will begin this month, beginning with “The OC” that will air in about 1 hours time (Thursday Night USA time).

Some of the series I’ll be looking forward to include: House (season 2 – 13/9), Lost (season 2 – 21/9), Joey (season 2 – 22/9), Alias (season 5 – 29/9), Smallville (season 5 – 29/9) and That 70s show (Season 8 – 2/12).

There are a few good series starting this year. I want to see “Bones” which stars David Boreanez from “Angel”. Mel is interested in “Reunion” which will air along side the OC, I don’t mind the look of that one either.

If only there was a way I could watch them without waiting for them to air in Australia ;-) .

Grumpy Bum

SouthPark Me! I spend a lot of time at work blocking inappropriate websites. Every so often they come up with one worth a look.

Today they found a SouthPark Character Creator. I had a little go and came up with this little guy whom I have called “Grumpy Bum”.

SOUTHPARK STUDIO

Enjoy! :-D

It’s Alive!

New PCI went down to my local Landmark Computer store to get a case to house the new motherboard I purchased for my main PC. I determined that my last efforts did successfully screw up my old motherboard, and I didn’t want to take that chance again.

I wanted to get a case that was a little more up market. I didn’t want to be sqeezing all the devices and cables in, whist trying to keep it all cool. So I picked up a model named “XION” which had heaps of space and heaps of fans. it also had a cool mounting feature for the drive bays. They only had a crappy blue color in stock (The silver and black look better), but I don’t really care what it looks like – I just want it to work. When I got it home I pulled out the crappy 350watt PSU that was included and threw in the 500watt (GRUNT!) one that Mel brought home for me.

When I plugged it all in I was rapped to find out that all my Hard Drives detected and everything was working. I was not so thrilled to be blinded by the glare of blue neon (click the picture above to see what I mean). I can actually disable the lights, but I think they’re growing on me. Plus, they make one hell of a night light for the loungeroom!
