Chris ‘n’ Andrew (CNA)

I have been neglecting my blog of late due to me spending all my time travelling to and from the city for 4 hours a day. Andrew, Lee and I have been studying Novell at Excom, all this week.

As I have been working with Novell since my traineeship in 2000, I know a lot of what is in the material. Even so, in between games of Freecell, I am picking up some pretty neat tricks I can’t wait to try out at work. I guess you don’t realise the full potential of a product until it is slowly drilled into your brain for 8 hours a day. We will hopefully be going for the CNA Exam (Certified Novell Administrator) in a couple of weeks giving me something to put on my resume that isn’t a cleverly worded fabrication.

As someone who never went to Uni, I am not really used to this relaxed style of learning. I still feel the need to ask to leave for the toilet. They give us many breaks and supply a full, catered lunch. These people really know their clientelle as the kitchen is always fully stocked with Coffee, Chocolate and Coke.

Wish me luck as I attempt to study for my first exam in 9 Years!

Crow’s Nest

It’s the end of Term 2 and Edrington is battoning down the hatches in preparation for the Klepto builders that will be roaming around during the break. Rather than lock up our Axis Netcam, I’ve decided to bring it home to test it out. It is just running straight through my router so you can see what’s happening 24 / 7 outside my house. This will only be around for the holidays so I’ll have to come up with some creative spots to point it at, whilst it’s here. Enjoy!

Are you sure?

I don’t know about you but I am sick of being asked questions by Windows Xp that really don’t do diddley. The first and most popular in my opinion is the “End Now?”. 99% of the time the answer to that is “Yes!”, so you click it and, you guessed it, nothing happens. Mind you when you accidentally click to send an error report to Microsoft that message is out and through the Internet before you can stop it! My opinion would be that if the computer ever gets into a state where a program is asking you whether to terminate, give us an option to set it to stop asking us and just automatically do so!

My second favorite would be when canceling a print job. It great to see page after page of garble printing out, even though you told it 5 minutes ago to cancel the job. “Are you sure?” It asks you. I click “Yes!” in response and the most that accomplishes is the word deleting appears next to the document that is continuing to print in full. (I know you can just take the paper out of the printer and turn it off to stop this but that’s not really the point.)

My last favorite is the hardware-troubleshooting wizard. No magic here, when it will always start with something like “are you sure the device is switched on and properly connected”. No It’s still in the box, doesn’t windows unpack it for me too? I am seriously thinking about jumping the proverbial fence to ‘mac’land.

Well thats enough bitching this morning, I’m off to – you guessed it! – fix printer and network problems.

The brain is a wonderful organ; it starts working the moment you get up in the morning, and does not stop until you get to work.
